We interview Briar Nolet and give you the chance to see her live on stage with The Next Step!

Briar Nolet is a force to be reckoned with.

You may recognise the young dancer’s name from World of Dance, where she competed earlier this year in season 3 in front of the UK (and, you know, the world) with none other than Jennifer Lopez who is both producer and a judge on the show. Briar made waves across the net with her shock confession during the season’s episodes, sharing her story of epilepsy and how she nearly had to say goodbye to dancing forever – but, with a stroke of luck and some incredible perseverance, Briar moved onwards and upwards. Having since toured with JLo on her It’s My Party tour, she now rejoins the cast of her debut hit TV series The Next Step, linking back up with her castmates (and some new faces too!) for their third tour down under. We were lucky enough to have a quick interview with Briar before she heads out to Australia.

WHAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH DANCING, AND WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO TAKE IT FURTHER ON A PROFESSIONAL LEVEL?

Music, and the freedom of movement made me fall in love with dancing. Once I started training competitively I was hoping it was gonna be a big part of my life, but I would say around 13 was when I knew I wanted dance to be a part of my life forever.

MANY OF YOUR PERFORMANCES HAVE GONE VIRAL ONLINE, AND YOU HAVE A SUPER EMOTIVE, EVOCATIVE STYLE THAT PEOPLE GO CRAZY FOR. IS THERE A PARTICULAR STYLE OF DANCE THAT YOU’RE A LITTLE MORE IN LOVE WITH THAN THE REST?

I definitely channel my personal experiences and stories through my dancing. I would say my favourite style would be a mix of jazz, hip hop, and acro in one. Along with contemporary, so hard to pick between those two.

WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHOREOGRAPHER THAT YOU’VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH?

Too many to choose from! Every choreographer has their own intention, style, flair, and I appreciate learning from each and everyone I get to work with.

YOU’VE BEEN ON SUCH AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY SINCE YOUR INITIAL DEBUT WITH THE NEXT STEP AND YOUR TIME COMPETING ON WORLD OF DANCE. WHAT WAS IT LIKE MEETING JLO AND DANCING FOR SUCH A HIGHLY ESTEEMED PANEL?

The Next Step & World Of Dance have been two of the most memorable experiences so far. (On meeting JLo) It was very exciting and surreal! They are such inspirations so I was so excited to show them what I could do and receive feedback!

WE’RE SUPER EXCITED TO SEE YOU TAKE THE AUSTRALIAN STAGE AS PART OF THE NEXT STEP CAST. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY FUNNY MOMENTS YOU’VE HAD WITH THE CREW OR IN REHEARSALS FOR THE TOUR?

Since I’ve been on tour with JLo, I actually haven’t been in any rehearsals for the tour yet! But I’ve heard such amazing things and can’t wait to get working on it when I get home!

THIS IS ACTUALLY THE THIRD TIME NOW THE NEXT STEP HAVE TOURED AUSTRALIA, AND THE LAST TWO TOURS WERE SOLD OUT! WHAT CAN WE EXPECT THIS TIME ‘ROUND?

This time you guys can expect new characters joining us, a brand new show with new routines, tricks, lifts & so much more! We can’t wait to come back!

YOU RECENTLY REVEALED YOU HAVE DEALT WITH A DEBILITATING BATTLE AGAINST EPILEPSY THAT NEARLY STOPPED YOU FROM DANCING. WHAT HAS BEEN MOST CHALLENGING ABOUT DANCE SINCE YOUR EPILEPSY DIAGNOSIS?

My seizures were triggered by learning dance choreography, so even now that I’m on medication and have been seizure free for a while, whenever I take a class I still get a little anxious knowing that this is the situation that used to put me into a seizure.

WHAT KEEPS YOU STRONG WHEN DOING TOURS AND SHOWS AROUND THE WORLD?

Good sleeps, healthy eating, stretching to cool down my body after a show, doing a workout or yoga class on the morning of a show, and getting a good warm up in right before the show!

IF YOU COULD GIVE ANY ADVICE TO ASPIRING YOUNG DANCERS, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

You are limitless, follow your dreams. Put your mind to something, stay inspired and motivated and work hard to achieve that goal.

WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO SEE THIS INCREDIBLE DANCE CAREER TAKE YOU OVER THE NEXT 5-10 YEARS?

Over the next 5-10 years I’d love to be adding music to my career. Becoming my own artist/musician and adding that to my dance.

We’re so excited to see where this incredible journey takes you, Briar! With such an inspiring story about overcoming her medical setbacks and never letting it stop her from reaching for the stars, there may be a little something in Briar’s story for all of us to walk away with.
