Why Canberra is Cool

No longer can Canberra be considered boring or just the place you go to for grade six excursions. With the range of uber cool bars, restaurants and shopping experiences, this place could give Sydney or Melbourne a run for its money. Our little family has found itself drawn to Canberra, (the capital of Australia), at least once a year to check out its newest offerings, while experiencing some of the more classic attractions such as Art Galleries and the Parliament Houses. Recently we took a quick trip to celebrate my 40th Birthday and squeezed in some awesome things to do as a family.

Ovolo Nishi (formally Hotel Hotel)

When I was deciding on where to spend my special Birthday, this building popped straight into my head. The moody lighting, unique furnishings plus the beautiful architecture, It’s my idea of heaven! Added to that is the amazing food that comes out of its restaurant Monster… This is where Birthday dreams are made of! The tweens also loved their time at Hotel Hotel. So much, in fact that we spent half an hour photographing ourselves sitting in all the beautiful chairs that decorated our two bedroom suite.

Lazy Su

If you want ridiculously delicious food with stunning drinks, a buzzing atmosphere in a beautiful space and top notch service…this is the place for you! Our Little family had a wonderful experience here to celebrate my Birthday. The tween girls drank virgin cocktails and sang along with the music while we munched on a range of Japanese style small plates. Lazy Su is in high demand at the moment, so make sure you book!

Go Boat Canberra

Thank goodness for social media! That is how I stumbled across this wonderful concept, a way to explore a different side of Canberra. Go Boats are Scandinavian boats that you can hire to explore the edges of lake Burley Griffin, they are perfectly set up to eat and drink as you sail along looking at the sights. Our morning trip in the Go Boat was idyllic, as we munched on yummies that we picked up from 7th And Bake and enjoyed the spectacular views.

Mookie Burger

My girls have a love for burgers and chicken wings, so I am always on the lookout for delicious versions of both these foods. Mookie Burger offers this plus local beer for mum and dad! A stylish industrial restaurant helps ticks all the boxes for my ideal fast food joint. We didn’t have room for desserts that day but their concrete custards look amazing!!

Bison Home

One of my favourite Australian brands has a store in one of my favourite streets in Canberra, Lonsdale St. This Braddon store is full of beautiful colours to feed the mind and special vessels to use in your home… I must admit I treated myself to some Birthday treats on this visit!

National Portrait Gallery

No matter what exhibition is on, we always try and make a quick visit to The National Portrait Gallery…It has a wonderful gift and bookshop inside which has the best choices for gift buying. On our recent trip we saw Star Struck- Australian Movie Portraits, which happened to have two of The Priscilla Queen of The Desert Costumes on display as well.

Old Bus Depot Markets

Food! Food! Food! Head to these markets hungry and fill your tummy with a selection of multicultural delights. This would be the best place to shop if you were hosting a dinner party…a wide range of dips, nibbles, meats, breads, vegetables, fruits and sweets. Set against the back drop of the old industrial buildings, this is a lovey morning out.
